BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom — Aston Villa suffered a second major early-season injury blow on Monday, with England defender Tyrone Mings set to miss a lengthy amount of time with what the club described as a “significant knee injury.”
Mings writhed in agony and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after injuring his right knee when making an interception during Villa’s 5-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

“The defender has undergone scans,” Villa said in a statement, “and will unfortunately require surgery ahead of a lengthy rehabilitation process.”

WHAT OCCURED? On Saturday, Mings was stretchered off the ground midway through the first half against Newcastle. The England international was seen running alongside Magpies forward Alexander Isak towards the corner of the pitch before collapsing to the ground in agony, clutching his knee.
