Cardiff City defender Joe Bennett suffered the injury in the 4-0 win over Derby County on Tuesday night
Cardiff City have confirmed that defender Joe Bennett has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The left-back went down in a heap in the 4-0 win over Derby County on Tuesday night.
Turning in the middle of the pitch just before half-time, Bennett let out an audible shriek which alerted players and staff to the seriousness of the injury.
Play was stopped for six minutes, with Bennett eventually stretched off in obvious discomfort.
Bennett was described by McCarthy as “not good.” “He will be evaluated tomorrow, but I’m neither a doctor nor a surgeon.
Boss Mick McCarthy said in his post-match press conference that it did not look good.
He’s in bad shape already. He is kneeling. You could see that wasn’t right since it was exceptionally difficult for him. There will be speculation that it could be ligaments or the ACL, etc.
“I’m not going to try to attempt to describe what it is until he has a scan and the doctors have determined what it is. Everyone will venture an opinion.
“You could tell, he didn’t move. When someone goes down and doesn’t move you know he’s hurt and it’s a real sore one.”
Cardiff have now confirmed the worst news that they feared for Bennett.
The club tweeted: “Scans today have shown that @JoeBennett27 sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee during City’s match with @dcfcofficial on Tuesday night. He will now be referred to a specialist. We’re all with you, Joe!”
The injury rules Bennett out of the Bluebirds’ Championship season run-in, and with the 30-year-old out of contract in the Welsh capital this summer, the future remains uncertain for the full-back.
Bennett’s misfortune presents youngster Joel Bagan with an opportunity between now and the end of the campaign, and McCarthy backed him to do a job for the Bluebirds.
Cardiff has now corroborated Bennett’s worst-case scenario.
The team tweeted: “Scans performed today revealed that @JoeBennett27 suffered an anterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee during Tuesday night’s encounter between City and @dcfcofficial. Now, an expert will be referred to him. Joe, we’re all behind you.Bennett’s future is uncertain because he will miss the remainder of the Bluebirds’ Championship campaign due to injury, and the 30-year-old’s contract with the Welsh capital expires this summer.
Young Joel Bagan has an opportunity due to Bennett’s tragedy between now and the conclusion of the season, and McCarthy has backed him to work for the Bluebirds.
