Dallas injured his knee challenging for a ball with Jack Grealish just before half-time.
The 31-year-old received treatment on the pitch and was taken off on a stretcher after a lengthy stoppage, with Dan James replacing him.
Head coach Jesse Marsh said after the game that Dallas had undergone a scan and the injury “did not look good”. The Northern Ireland international was in a brace after the match, suggesting a serious injury.
Leeds confirmed on Sunday that Dallas has sustained a femoral fracture.
A statement from Leeds read: “Stuart Dallas faces a lengthy period out of action due to a femoral fracture sustained in yesterday’s Premier League game with Manchester City.
“Stuart was kept overnight at Leeds General Infirmary and will now travel to London for surgery and further tests.
“It is impossible to put into words just how important Stuart is to Leeds United on and off the field.
“Anyone who knows Stuart, knows he will come back from this stronger than ever, and in the meantime, he is sure to make his presence known at both Thorp Arch and Elland Road.”
Dallas has been an ever-present for Leeds in the Premier League this season, starting every game under Marsch and previous head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Leeds’ next game is away against Arsenal next Sunday. They sit 17th in the table, five points ahead of 18th-placed Everton having played two matches more.
