Sad news: Rangers announced a dangerous injury to their best midfielder this morning, believing he will die.

Steven Gerrard admits Rangers’ growing injury list is a concern after four key men encountered problems either before or during the Dundee United rout.

Leon Balogun was injured in the warm-up and replaced by Filip Helander before kick-off, while Ryan Jack, Brandon Barker and Alfredo Morelos were all forced off during the match – which Rangers won 4-0.

They’ll join Joe Aribo, Allan McGregor, Jordan Jones and long-term absentee Nikola Katic in the treatment room.

Gerrard explained that some may be back sooner than others, but admits the current situation is a bit of a worry.

He said: “Leon’s felt a bit of tightness in his quad. Hopefully we’ve got to that one early. We had the choice to take a risk with that but there was no need because Phil was ready to come in. So that happened before the game, it wasn’t ideal, we had to adapt and bring George [Edmundson] into it.

“Ryan Jack’s got a calf problem we’ll need to scan, to see the extent to that. Brandon Barker’s clearly done a hamstring. Normally they are at least a couple of weeks.

“And obviously Morelos has got a gash on his knee. From the side I was worried and concerned because it looked worse than just a gash. So I think he’s come away and he’s a lucky boy. Thankfully it’s only a gash and that should give him an outside chance for Thursday.

“All being well. The doctor’s confident if we manage it right he might be OK for Thursday. I’ll leave this game concerned about injuries, of course I will, but I have to remember it was a strong performance from the boys.

“It’s nice that they’ve got that record, but we need to forget the record and win football matches.”
