West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has confirmed that Jeremy Sarmiento will miss the next month of Albion’s campaign after suffering a muscle injury in the aftermath of his only Baggies start in the goalless draw with Millwall. Corberan granted Ecuador international Sarmiento, borrowed from Brighton in the summer, his first start against the Lions and he was introduced from the bench at Preston on Saturday.

The reason for his return to the bench, though, was because of what Albion’s medical department deemed to be fatigue in the muscle following his first start, and his largest portion of competitive minutes for quite some time, having had his game-time restricted at the Seagulls. Sarmiento completed another cameo at Deepdale, but he still complained of pain in his quads over the weekend and was sent for scans. He wasn’t involved at all in the win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.

The results returned a diagnosis which Albion and Corberan didn’t want, nor did they need after the injury suffered to another summer arrival in Josh Maja, at Bristol City last month. Sarmiento will now be unavailable to the Spaniard for at least the next four weeks.

“The risk with Jeremy to play the game, whenever he is playing more minutes, always there is a risk because he’s a player who hasn’t had the habit to play games,” Corberan said. “It looked like he was recovering well, from the game against Millwall, and I had him in mind when we were preparing for Preston, but from the muscle perspective he arrived at Preston with half a full recovery.

“He had some pain in the quadriceps. From our medical department, they understood it was just normal from the fatigue of the game, after it being a long time without playing. That’s why I decide not to play with him in the first XI against Preston and I’d have him ready from the bench. He was playing some minutes and at the end of the game, he felt pain in the muscle, in the left quadricep.

“With this pain, he was receiving treatment on Sunday and when the doctors checked – when the pain was there and didn’t disappear, they made a scan – yesterday, it showed an injury. It is going to keep him apart from the group for four weeks. It’s difficult.”

With Pipa only limited to a cameo at Preston at the weekend and with Darnell Furlong still preferred at right wing-back, Albion are now struggling for the next month – at the very least – to feel any benefits of their transfer window, having only been able to add three new faces over the course of the summer.
