‘Too frequently,’ Mark Robins suggests a position move for a Coventry City player if his injury record is addressed.
Mark Robins delivers an update on Josh Eccles’ latest setback in Coventry City injury news from CoventryLive.
Josh Eccles is awaiting word on the extent of his injuries after being stretchered off on only his sixth appearance for Coventry City this season.
The 22-year-old went down in the box after only 30 minutes against Stoke on Saturday, suffering a hamstring strain that may force him to miss the start of pre-season. It’s a major setback for the Sky Blues Academy graduate, who has emerged as a real candidate for the right wing-back position after a succession of excellent displays.
Despite being a central midfielder by trade, the Coventry-born youngster made his debut against The Potters in January and looked at ease and confident in the right-hand seat.
He continued to excel in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough and Premier League Southampton, where he was selected ahead of Todd Kane, only to suffer ankle ligament damage at St Mary’s, which kept him out for nearly three months. That was a huge letdown for the youngster, who had missed the first part of the season due to a hip ailment that required surgery.
Manager Mark Robins regards Eccles as a major rival to Fankaty Dabo and Kane, such is his quality and potential for a bright future after demonstrating he’s more than capable at Championship level.
“You can see why I started him,” City manager Pep Guardiola stated ahead of Saturday’s meeting at the Bet365 Stadium. “It was a fantastic half-hour from him, but he got injured, and he’s been injured far too often, so that’s something we need to look into.”
“If he can stay fit and get ready for pre-season… I’m not sure how long he’ll be out.” Depending on how terrible this is, he could miss a couple of weeks of preseason. It’s a hamstring injury, so we’ll have to wait and see what they say after his scan. But we’re hoping to bring him back since he’s a tremendous talent who can play multiple positions.
“He’s a midfield player as you know, but he’s really performing to a high level at wing-back.”
