When Mark Robins’ team dominated Stoke 2-0 today at the Bet365 Stadium to earn their third straight Championship victory and move up another spot to third from the bottom, Godden was noticeably absent.

Although Godden’s injury put a visible damper on an otherwise wonderful day’s work on the road, Robins was overjoyed with the victory. The 31-year-old has endured a terrible run of health issues over the past two years, including appendicitis and a chronic foot condition.

The City manager said when asked about Godden’s absence: “Matty is going to be gone for a while, three to four months. He will be gone for a few months due to a damaged ligament in his right ankle, which is just bad luck.

“His foot was in the air and the ball hit him mid-air with a loose ankle and he moved it outside and he has put his weight through it as it landed and obviously that has caused him a major problem. Sod’s law!”

Asked if he will require surgery, he said: “Probably. It’s a really big blow for him and for us.”
