Wrexham captain LUKE YOUNG called the Stockport catastrophe as a wake-up call, and he says the team want to make amends when Crewe Alexandra visit The STóK Cae Ras tomorrow.

Wrexham were hammered 5-0 by the Hatters, who handed the Reds their biggest defeat since Phil Parkinson took over as manager in July 2021.

Wrexham’s seven-game undefeated run in League Two came to an end when they allowed five goals for the third time in nine games, but Young is determined to bounce back at the first opportunity after a productive week on the training field.

“You never want to lose a game, but when you lose it like we did, I think it wakes you up a little bit,” remarked the midfielder.

“You can never take any game for granted, and you can never come in thinking you’re going to win it whether you’re on an unbeaten streak or not.””Anybody can beat anybody on their day,” Young said. “The unbeaten run has come to an end, but we have got to try and put things right this week, and try and go on another one.” Young insists he never got carried away when Wrexham began to gain momentum and went on an unbeaten run following the 5-3 defeat to MK Dons on the opening day of the season. “You never get too high and you never get too low.”

The Hatters scored a fourth goal early in the second half and another in added time to round off a terrible afternoon for the Reds. The defeat was difficult to accept, but with Wrexham seventh in the table and only five points behind leaders Notts County, Young is looking ahead.

“You can’t dwell on things too much,” he said.

“Games come thick and fast, and if you dwell on it, you’ll find yourself with a mountain to climb.”

“We were in a good position after the last win against Grimsby; we dropped a few places after losing to Stockport, but we have to move forward and think positively.”

“Have a hard week of training, work hard on what we need to work on, and keep doing what we need to do with the ball.”

“We have an incredible group of players, tremendous squad depth, and great personalities.”

“Everyone will be hurting but everyone will be wanting to put it right.”
