Following Coventry Rugby’s historic 28-14 victory over the English champions Saracens, the magnitude of the club’s accomplishment is still felt throughout the city.

Since then, Alex Rae’s team has received a lot of praise on social media, and Cov’s usual shy head coach admitted

He affirmed that Saturday was a wonderful day for the club as a whole. The atmosphere and the crowd were incredible, and to pack the ground with huge numbers of fans was just amazing. Coventry allowed seven players to make their competitive debuts, including former Jersey wing Ryan Hutler. Hutler joined hooker Suva Ma’asi, man of the match Will Wand and recently-capped Tonga fly half Pat Pellegrini when they crossed the Sarries try line.

Rae was pleased with his team’s performance levels all over, and he said they should now quickly get their feet back on the ground and deliver a similarly impressive performance when they visit Harlequins at the Stoop in the next Saturday’s second round of cup action.

We were very committed, and the level of detail, our physicality and the energy we brought to our game on a very hot day was brilliant.

“Saracens brought a really strong side and finished with plenty of Premiership experience and some internationals on the field, so it wasn’t as if we beat an academy team.

We are very excited for Harlequins’ challenge this Saturday, but we are also anticipating it. If we can’t then go to the Stoop and back it up, there’s no point beating Saracens at home.
