Brendan Rodgers has spoken out about Matt O’Riley’s summer transfer interest and the possibility of a new contract at Celtic.
The Hoops turned down an offer from Leeds United in the English Championship for their midfielder, who has made an immediate impact under the new management. He’s already scored four goals in the Scottish Premiership this season and has played an important part for the Scottish champions thus far. The Elland Road outfit put the Parkhead side’s resolve to the test as they seek a return to England’s top flight. Former Rangers player Glen Kamara has now joined the club, but Rodgers admits it was a ‘open conversation’ as he gave his fundamental reasons why they HAD to keep O’Riley.
The Celtic manager believes his value will skyrocket in the coming year as he continues to develop the former MK Dons man. There is already discussion of a possible call-up to Denmark’s senior squad, which would be another step forward in his development and a reward for his recent form. Rodgers is open to extending the 22-year-old’s contract, as he has done with crucial teammates Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Callum McGregor, Liel Abada, and Anthony Ralston.
