Celtic have found a terrific ‘athlete’ in 24-year-old Barry Ferguson, according to Ferguson.

Former Rangers great Barry Ferguson believes Celtic have discovered a hidden treasure in Canadian full-back Alistair Johnston.

Ferguson was discussing Anthony Ralston’s new four-year contract with the Hoops when he began talking about the player who is keeping the Scotland international out of the starting eleven.

“He’s a good backup for Alistair Johnston, who’s an athlete,” Ferguson remarked on [The Go Radio Football Show].

“Let’s be honest, he has been another real good find for Celtic.”

The Canadian international was brought in to replace former Celtic fullback Josip Juranovic. In January, the Croatian left the club to join Union Berlin.

Ange Postecoglou acted rapidly in the transfer market before Juranovic left to bring in a replacement. Johnston excelled at the World Cup in Qatar, and the rest, as they say, is history.

His confrontational personality, along with his love for the club, has swiftly won over the Celtic faithful. And, on top of that, he’s a fantastic footballer.

It’s hard to believe Johnston has only made 25 appearances for Celtic. He appears to have been a member of the club for many years.

In that short period, the 24-year-old has already won a domestic triple with Celtic, and with the club four points clear at the top, he might be in position for another league title.

With 34 international caps under his belt, Johnston is highly appreciated by his country, and he has the potential to become one of Canada’s most capped players of all time.

Celtic fans, on the other hand, are more interested with what he accomplishes for the team. And right now, Johnston is doing all of his talking on the field, shackling SPFL strikers and attempting to establish himself among Europe’s elite in the Champions League.
