Long-serving Derby midfielder set to return after month out with ankle injury

Max Bird, a Derby County midfielder, is scheduled to return to the Rams squad on Saturday after recuperating from an injury.

Bird is expected to return to the Derby squad to face Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon, according to BBC Sport Derby presenter Dominic Dietrich.

Bird suffered the injury in the final few minutes of a 2-1 home loss to Oxford United in mid-August, walking off shortly before the final whistle.

He was supposed to be out until the end of October at the very least, but he appears to have recovered from his injuries far sooner than expected.

His injury also put an end to any potential reunion with former boss Liam Rosenior at Championship side Hull City, after it was believed they were interested before his injury. Rosenior and his helper were even seen at the Oxford game where Bird was injured.

Max Bird return comes as huge boost for Paul Warne

Having Bird back will be a great boost for manager Paul Warne, following the latest setback to fellow midfielder Elliot Embleton, who is now projected to be out for the next few months with an ankle ailment similar to Bird’s.

Embleton joins Conor Hourihane and Liam Thompson as the other Derby midfielders on the sidelines, so even with Bird back, Derby are still rather weak in that area of the ground.

With many of players still available on free transfers, Warne may be obliged to dive into the free agent market for a midfielder, even if it is only on a contract until January.
