The Daily Mail reported that Evangelos Marinakis was eager to hire the famed manager. He eventually remained faithful to Steve Cooper, which proved to be a highly popular decision.
Sampaoli was linked with Forest in April
At the time, it appeared to be idle paper talk. Forest had not won in ten games, and clearly, there was no smoke without fire, and the board was contemplating options, with Sampaoli on the radar.
Sampaoli eventually joined Flamengo in Brazil. The manager is expected to leave after winning 20 of his 39 games, according to Brazilian journalist Julio Miguel Neto.
The reason for the manager’s departure is unknown. However, it appears that he has already said farewell to his players and will not be returning to the Premier League.
Forest right to stick with Cooper
This would have been a recipe for disaster. Sampaoli hasn’t lived in one place for long in recent years, and he appears to be a volatile figure.
In addition, the seasoned manager has never worked in the Premier League. With only a few games remaining last season, appointing him would have been dangerous.
Sampaoli was definitely hesitant to join Forest. Some said that he had turned down a move to the City Ground in order to go to Brazil.
At Forest, Cooper is worth his weight in gold. He deserves time to get things right, and after bringing in 13 new players in the summer, any discussion of a firing is likely to be put on hold until the 2023/24 season.
