Manchester United may be kicking themselves for missing out on signing Kieran Trippier while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still in charge. The England international is one of Newcastle United’s most consistent players, and he reaffirmed his value to the team in Sunday’s rout of Sheffield United.

Trippier had three assists against the Blades, an amazing performance from the right-back in a game that Newcastle won 8-0 with eight different goal scorers. Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, and Sven Botman all got in on the act to put pressure on Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom.

After a rocky start to the season, the Magpies have now calmed the ship, and with Trippier as captain, they will try to improve on their unexpected top-four finish in 2022/23.

The 33-year-old has progressed since his arrival on Tyneside, confirming to United that they made a mistake by not signing him in the summer of 2021.

When asked if the Red Devils were pursuing him last year, Trippier told The Mirror, “Yes, they were.” There were a few clubs nearby. At the outset of the season, I spoke with [Atletico Madrid] manager [Diego Simeone] and agreed that if an opportunity arose, I would take it.
