How Middlesbrough pulled off a ‘steal’ in signing Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest

Lewis O’Brien, a former Huddersfield Town midfielder, is expected to start for Middlesbrough next week against Blackburn Rovers.

EFL analyst Sam Parkin thinks Middlesbrough’s acquisition of Lewis O’Brien was a “real steal.” A day before the transfer window closed last week, the midfielder transferred from Nottingham Forest to Boro on a temporary basis.

O’Brien, a crucial player in Huddersfield Town’s journey to the 2022 Championship Play-Off Final, was thrust into action right away. The 24-year-old played as a substitute in the second half of Saturday’s upsetting home loss to Queens Park Rangers.

Parkin said: “I think it is a really good signing and it is in a position that they were short.” when speaking on the What the EFL?! podcast. That has, in my opinion, been clear in the first few games.

“They have midfielders with a variety of profiles. There are some highly talented players.
When Michael Carrick’s team visits Blackburn Rovers after the break, O’Brien might earn his first Boro start since the break. “Lewis has experienced success before,” Carrick remarked after bringing O’Brien on board. He’s a decent age, has a lot of experience, and offers something different from what we already have.

He seems to have a future outside of the City Ground. O’Brien has only made 17 appearances for Forest and was dropped from their Premier League roster in January.

O’Brien moved to DC United in March to work for Wayne Rooney, a former Manchester United and England player. In the MLS, his spirited performances in the heart of the midfield attracted attention.
