‘They had an agreement’: Romano says Wolves convinced 26-year-old to join, but made ‘horrible’ bid

Wolves tried to land Boulaye Dia on transfer deadline day, and Fabrizio Romano has now shed a bit more light on the situation via his YouTube channel.

Wanderers attempted to bring in another striker at the 11th hour on Friday.

Che Adams was thought to be the player they really wanted.

But Southampton blocked his exit, meaning Wolves had to look elsewhere.

And they made a late bid to sign Dia from Salernitana – but the proposal put forward was rejected by the Italian club.

Last night, the club’s sporting director made an extraordinary public address about Wolves’ attempt to sign Dia – and slammed Wolves.

Wolves had convinced Boulaye Dia, but proposal was ‘horrible’

Sporting director Morgan de Sanctis said yesterday (via Goal): “We received a phone call late on Thursday night with talk of a loan with the option to buy for figures that, if I were to make public, would cause a diplomatic incident. None of their directors contacted me personally. This affected Dia. I expect the player to realise how much we have given him, because we want a rapport of reciprocal respect and hope we can continue like the previous 12 months together.”

Romano has now touched on the situation.

He says that Wolves had convinced the player to join them, creating a ‘problem’ for Salernitana.

He said on YouTube: “So he mentions that Wolverhampton presented a horrible proposal for Boulaye Dia in the final hours of the market, creating a problem. Because they had an agreement with the player. They convinced the player. The player was going to fight and create an issue for Salernitana. But then the bid was absolutely not enough to convince the Italian club.

“The Italian club is completely furious with Wolves. But this is something that is showing how sometimes in the final 24 hours of the market, a player could push to leave the club. But at the end the right proposal is needed to, it’s not about just convincing the player – it’s also about respect for the club.”

Seemingly, Wolves were banking on Dia to kick up a big enough fuss to force Salernitana to offload Dia on deadline day.

You can understand why the Italian club are angry.

Dia is a key player for them and they were never likely to sanction his exit in the final hours of the market.

Especially on a loan basis, which seems to be the proposal Wolves made.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Dia now in the coming months.

It may be that he pushes again in January to join Wolves.

But Salernitana are not happy with Wolves and may flat out refuse to do business.
