Former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said that McGregor “needs to be forced to take a break” in an exclusive interview with Football Insider.

The 30-year-old has played for the Celts in 423 games so far, is a regular in the starting lineup, and his current deal is good through 2028.

Last season, McGregor made 42 appearances for the Hoops, only missing one due to injury.

Brendan Rodgers’ team has a strong midfield, and yesterday (1 September), it was reported that Paulo Bernardo of Benfica would be joining them on a season-long loan.

McAvennie suggested that McGregor needs to sit out for a while.

McGregor has not really been at his best in the last few games and I do not think anyone will disagree with that,” he told Football Insider.

He is the most played player that I have ever seen, he never misses a game. Even with Scotland he goes everywhere and plays every game.

I think somebody has got to tell him to take a wee break. Knowing Callum he probably never even went on holiday, he was probably training. So I think someone has got to force him to take a break and miss a game

In addition, the Hoops skipper has accrued 52 Scotland caps since making his senior debut in 2017.

McGregor scored against Georgia to keep his country’s squad atop their group after appearing in all four of Scotland’s European qualifiers.

£10m would have been a good deal but would you want to go to the Championship when you can play in the Champions League.

I do not think it will have been that Celtic rejected the £10m because that is decent money and they have already got players that can do his job.Callum McGregor Injury Latest | Latest Celtic News

Brendan will have spoken to him and O’Riley would have turned it down saying he wants to play in the Champions League because that is what he has been dreaming of.
