‘I don’t think so’: Pundit shares his doubts over £44m Wolves player despite his bright start
Wolves legend Steve Bull believes the club cannot rely on Matheus Cunha to score goals regularly. The Brazilian has made a sharp start to the new season. Cunha, who turned his loan move to the club permanent for £44 million this summer, has made a lively start but has yet to score.
The South American ran rings around Manchester United’s defenders on Monday, and had about four decent chances to score, including one gilt-edged opportunity.
Cunha was also decent against Brighton in the first-half.
But for all of Cunha’s good play so far, he is without a goal and Bull – a man who knew the art of goalscoring very well during his playing days – doesn’t think he can be relied on.
Steve Bull doesn’t think Wolves can rely on Matheus Cunha for goals
Bull penned his latest Express & Star column before the 4-1 defeat to Brighton.
But what he has said about Cunha still stands, as the star blanked on Saturday.
In his eyes, the former Atletico Madrid man is a cracking player but just doesn’t display clinical traits.
He said: “Matheus Cunha was brilliant against Manchester United, but I don’t think he’ll get the goals for Wolves.
“For me, he’s not an out-and-out number nine, I think he’s a number 10 behind the front man.
“But his work-rate from box to box is incredible. I’d love to see him get a goal as it could start him on a goalscoring run, but is he the answer to all the goalscoring issues? I don’t think so.”
The evidence is there that Wolves can’t rely on Cunha for goals
Cunha has probably been Wolves’ best player across the two games against United and Brighton.
But his finishing needs a lot of work.
Cunha has never been a prolific goalscorer in his career. He’s only scored seven in 54 for Atletico and nine in 52 for RB Leipzig.
He plays much better as an attacking midfielder, as this allows him to utilise his dribbling ability and running power.
He also gets back in to defend which is really good to see.
But Wolves cannot be relying on Cunha to get the bulk of the goals. It just isn’t his game, so someone like Fabio Silva or Sasa Kalajdzic will need to step up.
