Derby County boss responds to links with ‘amazing’ player

Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphreys has seen his name linked with Derby County in the past couple of days, Paul Warne responded to the rumours when speaking with the press yesterday following his side’s 1-0 victory over Fleetwood Town.

The Derby boss recruited Humphreys whilst managing the Millers, but was quick to reject claims that he was once again in for the 24-year-old.

“Wow, that is amazing. I take full credit for signing Cameron Humphreys and he is an amazing centre-back,” Warne said to Derbyshire Live.

“But I don’t know if you noticed, I have quite a lot of centre-backs and I have not got £1.5million.

“He is also playing in the Championship and is quite happy. If I had £1.5million to buy a player and I bought a centre-back when I need attacking players, I would sack myself!

“It would be the worst waste of money, but Cameron is an amazing player. Where the story has come from I do not know. There is zero truth in it, you would be surprised to know.”

If we are being honest, this story seemed like a none-runner from the start.

Warne has five players capable of playing centre-back in Eiran Cashin, Sonny Bradley, Curtis Nelson, Craig Forsyth and Jake Rooney – so he is not wrong in suggesting it would be daft to add another into the mix when it is clearly the forward department that needs strengthening.

Humphreys is not joining, but who is?

Time is running out for the Rams gaffer to finalise his squad with the transfer window drawing to a close on September 1st, so it is set to be a hectic period at Pride Park as Warne looks to add the final touches.

It is believed that he is looking to add three to four players before the close of play the week after next, one of which is a midfielder who is supposedly close to agreeing a move. The story of the ex-Man City kid who Cruyff turned Ronaldo on his debut - Planet Football

Only time will tell, but Derby are seemingly hopeful of getting the right deals done.
