The Hammers are pressing ahead with their pursuit of Wahi along with Mohammed Kudus, with the young Frenchman thought to have set his sights on a move to the London Stadium already over interest from Chelsea and Tottenham.
West Ham don’t have a great record of spending big money on strikers in recent years, with Gianluca Scamacca’s return to Serie A just a year after arriving for £35.5million the latest example.
But a 20-year-old who already has 32 Ligue 1 goals on his record is undoubtedly an exciting prospect and if this deal is sealed it would constitute a potentially key addition to the squad.
Arriving late in the day would be, once again, a factor that won’t aid in a new signing adapting to the Premier League and David Moyes’ tactics smoothly, but that is the situation the club are in.
If Wahi were to take to the English top flight the way he has to the French at such a young age then he would appear to be a star in the making.
After relying so heavily on Michail Antonio in recent years, with the additions of Scamacca and Danny Ings not proving to make a real difference, Wahi might finally be the answer.
It has absolutely taken too long this summer but the end of the window is looking busy, as it needed to, and if the club can add the likes of Wahi and Kudus before the deadline it would have supporters feeling that much more optimistic for the new season.
In other West Ham news, an exit-linked Hammers midfielder has committed his future to the club.
