Norwich City have confirmed the signing of former England youth international from Millwall.

The 29-year-old has joined the Canaries on a free transfer from the Den and will provide competition for first-choice goalkeeper Angus Gunn following confirmation of Tim Krul’s exit to Premier League side Luton Town.

Long has signed a two-year deal at Carrow Road and was identified swiftly by City as somebody who could fill the void left by Krul.

A former England youth international, Long made 36 appearances for Millwall last season but has fallen down the pecking order following their signing of Matija Sarkic from Wolves earlier in the summer.

That has led to Millwall sanctioning a move away after Gary Rowett admitted to holding honest conversations with Long before the start of the season. He has been omitted from their matchday squads for the first two Championship matches of the campaign.

Norwich are also set to recall Jon McCracken from his loan at Scottish Premiership side Dundee as new goalkeeping coach Paul Clements holds a desire to assess the 23-year-old.

Discussing his move to Carrow Road, Long told City’s official channels: “It’s a really exciting opportunity for me, there was no hesitation at all when I got the call to say Norwich were interested and it’s happened really quickly,

“I didn’t need much convincing, the recent history, being in the Premier League and the size of the club, the fanbase and the ambition.

“It’s a really exciting proposition and I’m delighted to be here.”

Head coach David Wagner added: “We’re really happy to bring George into our group and welcome him to the club.

“He has a great amount of experience at this level and is someone we believe can help in the development and progress of our younger goalkeepers.”

Long has also played over 100 games for Sheffield United, having graduated through their academy, and featured 45 times for Hull in the Championship back in 2019/20.2,671 George Long Photos & High Res Pictures - Getty Images

During his time at Bramall Lane, Long spent time out on loan with Oxford United, Motherwell and Wimbledon – where he impressed in their League One campaign prior to his move to Hull.

He joined Millwall in 2021 after rejecting a new deal with the Tigers. Long was a part of the Lions’ side that fell just short of the Championship play-offs last season.

Long is City’s sixth senior addition of the summer, following Ashley Barnes, Jack Stacey, Shane Duffy, Borja Sainz and Christian Fassnacht. Vicente Reyes and Kellen Fisher have also formed part of David Wagner’s squad after joining this summer.
