DONE DEAL: Derby County has sign ‘great’ Championship talented skilful player……………..

Derby County are in the market for forward additions and Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith is high on their list.

According to The Star, the Championship outfit received an official loan bid from the Rams for the 31-year-old this weekend.

Paul Warne’s men lost their opening day fixture at home to Wigan Athletic. The match ended 2-1 to the visitors and the main concern, as it has been throughout pre-season, was the lack of goal threat in the final third.

James Collins had been in fine form during the summer friendlies, but lacked service yesterday and struggled to make an impact when he did have the ball at his feet.

Conor Washington made a substitute appearance but had limited time to show his capabilities on the day, also seemingly playing on the left wing as opposed to striker as Collins remained on the pitch in a central position.

The unlikely goal scorer for the Rams was Craig Forsyth from the left-wing-back position. In fact, he was arguably the most threatening player on the pitch and could have had a hat-trick given the opportunities presented to him.

It goes without saying that Derby should not be relying on a 33-year-old defender playing out of position to hit the back of the net. Warne simply has to bolster his striking options, and Smith would be a brilliant option.

Described as ‘great’ by former Owls boss Darren Moore following his impressive performances last season, the striker may be available this transfer window. He spent the entirety of Wednesday’s second tier opener versus Southampton on the bench under new manager Xisco Munoz on Friday evening.

Smith is a proven option

The 6 ft 3 ins Englishman scored 20 goals and hit eight assists in 49 appearances for the Owls last season as they were promoted from League One via the play-offs.

Having previously worked under Warne at Rotherham United, Smith may fancy a reunion at Pride Park if game time is no longer guaranteed at Hillsborough.

Alongside Smith, Martyn Waghorn and Jordan Rhodes have also been frequently linked with Derby moves over the past week or so.

It is clear that the Rams need to add quality and depth up top, it is also clear that Warne is desperate to do just that.

With the season now underway, Derby have to act fast.
