BREAKING NEWS: Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper is to join Charlie Savage at Reading. This is what happened in Solskjaer's final hours as Manchester United coach | Marca

Forgotten Manchester United star Joel Pereira looks set to make a return to English football and link up with summer departure Charlie Savage at Reading.

Remember Joel Pereira? The Portuguese goalkeeper was destined for big things at Manchester United, but never really reached his potential. He went on a plethora of loans whilst at Old Trafford, but was eventually released by the club in 2021.

He decided to make the move to the Eredivisie after leaving United, he’s spent the last two seasons at Dutch side RKC Waalwijk. But now once again, he’s available for free.

The Portuguese keeper is eyeing up a move back to England, with Reading interested.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Pereira is reportedly set to sign for Reading next week.

Reading are not in the best way at the moment. After their relegation to League 1 following a torrid season in the Championship – the club are now in a rebuilding process.

However, they also have massive financial problems, which have even had implications on even their most recent signings – with Charlie Savage in a sort of limbo due to an issue with HMRC.

Pereira would be perfect for them, as would obviously be on a free. He would provide good competition for current first-choice Dean Bouzanis.

Someone who had high hopes for Pereira at Manchester United was Jose Mourinho. During his time at the club, the fellow Portuguese man believed that Pereira was destined for greatness.

“We have two fantastic goalkeepers,” Mourinho said about David de Gea and Sergio Romero back in 2017. He then went on to mention his third choice, which at the time was Pereira.

“We have a third goalkeeper that I think will be the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation so anyone in goal I trust completely.”

How time flies… one minute Mourinho trusts you completely, and the next you’re fighting for a spot in a League 1 side!

Jokes aside, we wish Pereira all the best in the future and hope he can revitalise his career in England’s lower leagues.
