Aston Villa transfer latest as reports coming out of Villarreal claim that Pau Torres will soon be unveiled as the second summer signing
Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on the highly anticipated signing of defender Pau Torres from Villarreal – to the point where there are claims now coming out of Spain suggesting that confirmation of the agreement between the two clubs is imminent.
Torres, 26, is a Villarreal academy product and has played regularly in their first team in each of the last four years, but it’s clear that Villa boss Unai Emery is keen on a reunion in the West Midlands this summer and the Lions have been negotiating with the Spanish side in order to complete a transfer
The centre half, a Spanish international, has only a single year left on his contract at El Madrigal, and Villa are looking to take advantage and reunite Torres with Emery, under who he worked in La Liga for a couple of years prior to Emery’s switch to Villa at the end of last year.
Villarreal, who have just sold Nicolas Jackson to Chelsea, are believed to have accepted a bid in the region of £35m from Villa for Torres, who’ll present further competition for places in Emery’s defence; despite the expensive acquisition of injury stricken Diego Carlos last summer, Emery found that he was able to rely on Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa, who were excellent in the second half of the season.
Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause are the other centre half options available to Emery, although both are likely to be available for moves once Torres is in place and the competition for places further increases. Torres has previously sparked the interest of Tottenham Hotspur, but has stayed put at his boyhood club – until now.
