John Eustace says he wants to keep Ivan Sunjic at Birmingham City beyond the end of the transfer window.

The Croatian midfielder has won Eustace over this summer after returning to Blues from his disastrous loan spell at Hertha Berlin. Sunjic – who became Blues’ £6million club-record signing when he arrived from Dinamo Zagreb in 2019 – started the opening day draw with Swansea City on Saturday and produced an all-action display.

He missed three gilt-edged chances to score in South Wales, cleared one off the line at the other end and covered the ground in midfield. Sunjic was serenaded by a packed away end and Eustace was also appreciative of the midfielder’s efforts.

“Ivan was fantastic,” said Eustace. “Defensively, him and Krystian (Bielik) were very solid and limited Swansea to very few chances with the two centre-halves behind them. I thought all four of them were excellent from a defensive point of view.
