According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, AC Milan’s Andrea Romeo is set to join Sandro Tonali at Newcastle to help him settle in the North East.

Romeo has been ‘team manager’ for the Italian giants since 2017, but looks to be ready to leave and be integrated into Eddie Howe’s backroom team ahead of the new season.

It’s believed that the 52-year-old – who previously worked as a Serie A referee – will primarily be brought in to help Tonali settle in the North of England, but it’s unclear whether he will work with other players in the future.

Tonali had spent his entire career in Italy and has had to start taking English lessons upon his arrival, so hopefully Romeo will be able to help him with the cultural shift. Andrea Romeo set to join Newcastle United - Report | NUFC Blog

Newcastle United’s women’s team have been hailed as “trailblazers” as they prepare for their first season as a full-time professional club.

After winning promotion last season, Newcastle have taken the step to become the first fully professional team in the history of England’s third tier as they push to ultimately reach the Women’s Super League. As they prepare for the start of the new FA Women’s National League season, players and staff were celebrated at a special civic reception at Newcastle Civic Centre on Wednesday.

Veronica Dunn, the lord mayor of Newcastle, said their achievements were “historic” and that it was “about time” that the club’s female players were made professional to be given competitive salaries and access to top-class training facilities. She added: “I think we can say you are all trailblazers. It has been inspiring a new generation of girls into football.”

The team has attracted huge crowds of more than 20,000 for a handful of matches they have played at St James’ Park since May 2022 and will be there again this Saturday to take on West Bromwich Albion as part of the pre-season Sela Cup tournament, where Eddie Howe’s men’s team will be playing against Fiorentina and Villarreal.

Women’s manager Becky Langley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that turning professional was “massive” for the club. She said: “It means we have more minutes on the grass, so we can put those hard yards into action and the girls can get technically better, physically better, fitter, and build that team cohesion more.

“It also means, more importantly for the players, that they aren’t having to do another full-time job. Previously the players were part-time and were also teachers, coaches, students, police officers. There was a big variety of girls in the team, which was great and meant there were a lot of transferable skills.
