In what is being described as the “greatest honor ever” by officials close to the Indiana Hoosiers program, the University has officially announced plans to erect a statue of legendary basketball coach Bob Knight at the entrance of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The statue, which is set to be unveiled later this year, will serve as a permanent tribute to the man who shaped one of college basketball’s most storied programs.
Coach Knight, who passed away in November 2023, left an indelible mark not only on Indiana University but on the game of basketball itself. Known for his intense coaching style, emphasis on discipline, and dedication to his players’ development both on and off the court, Knight led the Hoosiers to three NCAA Championships (1976, 1981, and 1987), 11 Big Ten titles, and the only perfect season in modern college basketball history in 1976.
“This is not just a statue. It’s a symbol of legacy, pride, and excellence,” said Scott Dolson, Indiana University’s Athletic Director. “Coach Knight represents a golden era in Indiana basketball, and it’s only fitting that every fan and every player walking into Assembly Hall sees him standing there, larger than life, just as he was to the program.”
A Long-Awaited Tribute
While Knight’s coaching career ended at Indiana in 2000 under controversial circumstances, time has healed many wounds, and the university and the Hall of Fame coach reconciled in recent years. His emotional return to Assembly Hall in 2020 marked a turning point in the university’s relationship with its most iconic figure.
“We’re not just remembering a coach,” said Hoosiers team manager Jenna Whitmore, one of several student leaders working on the statue committee. “We’re remembering a man who changed lives. A man who expected the best from everyone, no matter who you were. The players, the managers, the fans—we all carry part of his legacy.”
The statue will be designed by renowned sculptor Brian Hanlon, who has worked on numerous iconic sports monuments across the country. According to early design mockups, the statue will feature Knight in his signature red sweater, arms crossed, his eyes locked forward—a pose that captures both his intensity and his poise.
Honoring a Complex Legacy
Knight’s career was not without controversy. Known for his fierce temper and strict methods, he was often a polarizing figure. However, former players, coaches, and fans continue to emphasize the positive impact he had on their lives.
“He wasn’t perfect, but who is?” said former Hoosiers guard Quinn Buckner, who played under Knight during the 1976 perfect season. “He taught us to be men, to be accountable, to value hard work and loyalty. What we accomplished wasn’t just because we were talented—it was because of him.”
The statue announcement comes after years of alumni requests and public petitions asking the university to immortalize Knight’s contributions. The idea gained momentum shortly after his passing in 2023, when a group of former managers and assistant coaches banded together to pitch the concept to university officials.
A Community Effort
Funding for the statue has been sourced entirely through private donations, many from Knight’s former players and devoted fans. The Hoosiers athletics department confirmed that over $750,000 has been raised, exceeding the statue’s estimated cost and allowing for additional commemorative features to be included in the area surrounding the installation.
These features will include plaques commemorating each of Knight’s championship seasons, a timeline of his coaching milestones, and a digital kiosk where fans can watch highlights and interviews from his career.
“We wanted this to be more than a statue—we wanted it to be a learning space, a reflection point,” said Tom Abernethy, a member of the 1976 team. “Future generations should know who Bob Knight was and what he meant to this program.”
A Momentous Dedication
The official unveiling ceremony is tentatively scheduled for October 18, 2025, just days before the start of the new basketball season. The event will include a reunion of former players, remarks from university leaders, and a tribute video chronicling Knight’s remarkable career.
“It’s going to be emotional,” said Athletic Director Dolson. “But it’s going to be beautiful. We owe him this. Indiana basketball wouldn’t be what it is today without Bob Knight.”
As Indiana prepares to immortalize its most iconic figure, one thing is certain: Bob Knight’s legacy will continue to inspire players, coaches, and fans for generations to come.
