Amadou Onana “really wants to leave” Everton this summer and Chelsea are preparing to make a move for the £50m-rated star, according to Simon Phillips.
Onana joined the club last summer in a £35m deal from Lille and was one of the club’s star performers as we avoided relegation on the final day, but lost his place in the team towards the end of the season under Sean Dyche.
The Belgium international has been linked with a move to several clubs including West Ham, but journalist Phillips wrote on his Substack that it’s Chelsea who are now preparing to make their move for the midfielder
“I am told Chelsea are now increasingly likely to push forward with a move to sign Onana as our potential second midfielder arrival,” he wrote (29 June). “The club like his physicality, energy, and aerial ability and as we know, have had a keen interest since January.
“Fee for Onana would be between £40m-£50m, which ironically is similar to Lavia, although I recently got told that Southampton were asking for north of £50m for Lavia.
“Again, a move for Onana is not yet set in stone, but the noise this week suggests a push could soon be made by Chelsea, knowing that the player really wants to leave and is keen on Chelsea.”
Oh no
Onana is quite obviously our best and most talented midfielder, and at just 21-years-old he has got huge potential and room to improve even further.
He is just one year into a long-term contract at Goodison Park and while the club clearly need to sell players to free up cash for the budget, Onana is someone who needs to be part of the squad going forward.
We need to keep our best players at the club if we want to improve and move away from relegation battles constantly, otherwise we have to constantly focus on replacing them and not getting any better.
Chelsea have got heaps of cash to spend after billionaire Todd Boehly took over last year and they won’t look twice at the £50m asking price, so there is a real chance he leaves.
If Dyche is willing to let him go then he clearly has a plan for life after him, but fans are right to question it and be worried about the new season already if this is the case.
