East Carolina University (ECU) head football coach Mike Houston is making a clear investment in quarterback Jake Garcia, as the Pirates look to build stability at the most critical position on the field. Following a week of practice leading up to an important game, Houston expressed confidence in Garcia’s development, particularly highlighting the young quarterback’s improved decision-making and arm strength.
“I thought today he had a lot of zip on the ball, very decisive,” Houston said in a conversation with ECU offensive coordinator John David Baker. “You know, I think the big thing he’s worked on all week is staying patient, and it’s something we’ve stressed with him consistently.”
Garcia, who transferred to ECU after stints at Miami and Missouri, is being groomed to take on a larger leadership role within the offense. His physical talent has never been in question—he possesses the arm strength, mobility, and athleticism that coaches dream of in a starting quarterback. However, according to both Houston and Baker, the key to unlocking Garcia’s full potential lies in improving his understanding of situational football and making smarter decisions under pressure.
“Jake’s got all the tools to succeed, but as a young quarterback, we need to make sure he understands the situations he’s in and what’s required of him,” said Baker. “We’ve spent a lot of time this week working on the finer details—when to push the ball downfield, when to take the safe play, and how to manage different game situations.”
Houston echoed Baker’s sentiments, emphasizing that while Garcia’s physical attributes are undeniable, success at the college level often comes down to mental processing and discipline.
“It’s not just about throwing the ball as hard as you can,” Houston said. “It’s about understanding what the defense is doing, reading coverages, and being smart with the football. Jake has made a lot of strides in those areas.”
In previous games, Garcia has shown flashes of brilliance, demonstrating his potential with accurate deep passes and his ability to extend plays. However, inconsistency in his decision-making, particularly in high-pressure situations, has led to turnovers and stalled drives. The ECU coaching staff is working diligently to improve Garcia’s poise, focusing on how to remain calm when the pocket collapses or when facing a strong defensive front.
“One of the things we’ve really honed in on is his situational awareness,” Baker added. “He’s a gunslinger, but sometimes the best play is the one that avoids a mistake. We’ve been drilling that into him—live to fight another down. You can’t win every game on one play, but you can lose it that way.”
Despite the growing pains, Houston remains committed to Garcia as a foundational piece of the program. The coach’s faith in Garcia stems not only from his obvious talent but also from the quarterback’s willingness to learn and improve. Houston has often spoken about the importance of cultivating leadership qualities in his quarterbacks, and he sees Garcia as someone capable of taking on that responsibility.
“Jake’s a competitor. He wants to win, and that’s what you want from your quarterback,” Houston said. “He’s working hard every day to get better, and that’s all you can ask for as a coach. The rest will come with time and experience.”
