On Tuesday, the New England Patriots revealed a new member of their defense.

Steele Chambers, an undrafted rookie linebacker, was waived by the Detroit Lions and signed with the Patriots the following day. In response, New England cut fellow rookie linebacker Jay Person.

The 23-year-old Chambers began his college career with the Ohio State University as a running back before switching to linebacker, where he started for three years. Over his three years on Ohio State’s defense, the 6-foot-1, 229-pound player recorded 114 tackles, three sacks, four interceptions, and five passes defended. He recorded a career-high 83 tackles with one interception last season.

Chambers will have his work cut out for him if he wants to make the Patriots roster as a defender because the linebacker position is loaded. But his running back background indicates he’s athletic enough to play on special teams. His best chance of making the squad out of camp would be then.

On Wednesday, New England will have its last required minicamp exercise before heading out for a six-week summer vacation.
