Dundee United are delighted to confirm Academy graduate Miller Thomson has penned a contract extension which will see him remain at Tannadice until the summer of 2027.
Earmarked as one of the next up-and-coming stars to develop on the east coast, Thomson’s talents were honed both on the turf of Foundation Park and the SFA Performance School at St John’s High School.His versatility and consistency for the Young Terrors, our U18s side, saw him receive widespread acclaim from the club’s coaching staff, and the Kirkcaldy-born starlet would go on to make his first-team bow in a Scottish Cup Quarter-Final against Champions-elect, Celtic, during the 2021/22 campaign. A full debut in a season-defining victory over St Mirren came just five days later.
Looking to cut his teeth in the world of senior football, Thomson embarked on a formative loan spell with Montrose last August, one which saw him contribute three goals and two assists to the Gable Endies’ promotion push. As a result, the 19-year-old returned to Tannadice in January staking a strong claim for a starting spot.
His opportunity to nail down a place in Jim Goodwin’s XI came with the visit of Queen’s Park on Matchday 25 and he grasped it with both hands – with an eye-catching display as a marauding right-back helping the Terrors secure an eventual 3-1 victory over the Spiders.
Starting 11 of our final 13 cinch Championship fixtures, Thomson became an integral member of the division’s meanest backline, also contributing assists in clashes with Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park respectively. He was one of 13 homegrown players to start a competitive match for United last term.
GOING BACK TO THE PREMIERSHIP WILL BE ANOTHER STEP UP
After committing his future to the club for the upcoming three seasons, the full-back said: “I’m delighted to get everything over the line. The Gaffer has put his trust in me from day one – that’s helped my confidence and spurred me on to go and impress him.
“Playing in front of the fans every week has been brilliant and I can’t wait to keep doing that next season – they’ve taken a shine to me and that’s been massively beneficial too.
“Going back into the Premiership will be another step up for me, it’ll be faster, more physical and the intensity will be higher. I’ve had a little taste of it before and that’s made me even more excited to get those experiences again.”

United Manager Jim Goodwin further expanded on his aspirations for Thomson’s development pathway, adding: “Upon his return from Montrose in the winter window, Miller was a revelation throughout the second half of the season.
“His impact on the side cannot be understated – he brought a completely different dynamic to the backline, offering us real pace and ball-carrying threat at a vital point in the title race, continuously improving on a weekly basis.
His experience of regular action at Links Park was invaluable, and the move was a shining example of the benefits of the loan system overall – he progressed exactly as we desired. Miller still has many aspects of his game he has to continue developing if he wishes to be a consistent performer in the Premiership, but he is a talent we hold high hopes for.”
