The Washington Commanders added players on both sides of the ball during their active offseason. Jer’Zhan Newton’s draft selection and the enormous extension given to Daron Payne may portend future developments for Jonathan Allen. They could get a respectable return from Allen, who is seen to be the Commanders’ best defensive player. According to a trade proposal from Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, Allen would join the Chicago Bears in exchange for a return of a second and sixth-round pick to Washington.
Bears would be given: Allen
Commanders would be awarded a second-round pick in 2025 and a fifth-round pick in 2026.
The 300-pound, 6-foot-3 defensive tackle is accustomed to taking a fair amount of snaps. Ballentine noted in his May 24 piece that he was at 82 percent in 2022 and 79 percent in 2023 when it came to players in need of a fresh start and trade packages. “But it’s reasonable to wonder if his snap share will remain the same and whether he’s in the Commanders’ plans beyond 2024 given the improved depth and additions on the defensive line that also includes former second-round pick Phidarian Mathis and former Dallas Cowboys selection John Ridgeway III.
Allen might do better in a scenario where he is still a featured player if he isn’t. In Chicago, where he would reunite with his former Commanders teammate, it would undoubtedly be the case.
It’s been a tough few years for the Washington Commanders organization, but Allen said “This is literally just a dream job right now,” according to Zach Selby, the Commanders’ senior writer.
