Najee Harris of the Steelers is “motivated” to disprove his detractors.

Earlier this month, the Steelers turned down running back Najee Harris’ fifth-year option.

Since it was only worth $6.79 million for a running back who became the first player in franchise history to dash for 1,000 yards in his first three seasons, the move has since been the subject of intense discussion.

Pittsburgh’s 2021 first-round selection, who is now in a contract year, is entirely focused on the 2024 campaign.

Josh Scott, Harris’ trainer, told Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “He’s motivated, to say the least.”

According to Scott, Harris has lost roughly seven pounds this summer as a result of becoming “almost obsessively clean” about his nutrition. Harris was classified as weighing 242 pounds, so he is currently closer to 235.

Although it might not seem like a significant leap, Harris will benefit from being able to increase his speed as he has been criticized for lacking breakaway speed.

The people who have taken issue with Harris’ play are probably among those who think his output as a fourth-year running back is more a result of quantity than quality.

This year, Harris is prepared to disprove those who doubted him.

“It’s all fueling his fire to have an even better season than last year and prove a lot of people wrong,” said Scott. He’s been as consistent as they come, but there are many who despise him for various reasons. He is resilient. I believe he will carry on like that. Contract season is one example that really speaks for itself.”

After completing their offensive line this offseason with first-round offensive lineman Troy Fautanu and second-round center Zach Frazier, the Steelers might come to regret their choice.
