JUST IN: Rod Brind’Amour provides injury update on Brett Pesce

Because the Carolina Hurricanes have so many talented defensemen, Tony DeAngelo has been playing less recently. However, with veteran Brett Pesce sidelined, DeAngelo may now need to contribute more to the NHL playoffs.

On Wednesday, DeAngelo and Brady Skjei worked together as a defence duo. As the Hurricanes prepare for Game 3 against the New York Islanders, their coach Rod Brind’Amour stated that Pesce’s lower-body injury from Game 2 will likely keep him out of the lineup for the remainder of the first-round series.

The Hurricanes have won both of their postseason games despite DeAngelo’s absence, and they now have a 2-0 series lead.

When asked about his lack of playing, DeAngelo replied, “It’s always tough, but it is what it is.” “This is my opportunity to step in, lend a hand, and hopefully make a difference.”

DeAngelo’s role is different this time around. He was a key member of the squad during the playoffs when he originally joined in 2021–22.He and Jaccob Slavin formed the top defensive duo. This was a result of Dougie Hamilton, the former member of the team, quitting.

Carolina traded him to Philadelphia following the season. The Flyers let him go, and they signed him again the following summer.

But this time around, with of the Hurricanes’ potent top-six defence, he has only been playing sparingly. Typically, Orlov plays with Chatfield, Pesce with Skjei, and Slavin with Burns.

DeAngelo praised Skjei, saying, “Just with his skating and the way he defends, he makes the pairing good.” He likened it to playing with Slavin.

Skjei, though, believes there are also definite advantages to the contest. Skjei said, “Get him the puck in the (offensive) zone.” That is his greatest asset. We are all aware of his offensive prowess.
