The Bears are reorganising their public relations department under someone who has plenty of experience managing the constant attention USC quarterback Caleb Williams will receive as they enter a new era with Williams expected to arrive as the No. 1 choice in the draft next week.

Ted Crews, who served as the Chiefs’ executive vice president of communications throughout their championship run, was named as president Kevin Warren’s special adviser and chief administrative officer. He will be in charge of football and business communications.

Crews is a longtime friend of Bears general manager Ryan Poles from their time together with the Chiefs. Crews arrived in Kansas City in 2012 and worked there through last season, when the Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five seasons; Poles worked in their personnel department from 2009 through ’21.

In the past two years, the Bears have let go of two more media relations staff members, including Brandon Faber, the former vice president of communications, who was let go this week.

Crews’ time with the Chiefs served as excellent practice for the kind of scrutiny Williams and the Bears will encounter. Not only were they the talk of the NFL because they prevailed, but Patrick Mahomes’ reputation has surpassed the boundaries of football, while All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce gained notoriety outside of football during his relationship with Taylor Swift last season.
