The next franchise quarterback will be selected by the Washington Commanders from among Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy with their second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Since it is widely believed that Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears would be selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Washington will be able to select among the remaining players.
There will be a lot of speculation, but in many mock drafts, it is widely believed that the Commanders will select Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington may select Drake Maye, according to some, but there have been other smokescreens that suggest J.J. McCarthy might be selected second overall.
A lot of speculation will come to an end when the NFL Draft takes place in Detroit, Michigan, in two weeks. Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic has the Washington Commanders selecting quarterback Drake Maye of North Carolina with this pick, rather than Jayden Daniels of the LSU Tigers, in his most recent NFL Mock Draft.
Baumgardner explained the Commanders’ actions with the following logic:
“Maye’s consistency in processing from the pocket is one area where he still needs to improve as a passer. However, when comparing him to Jayden Daniels, Maye has comparable shortcomings and superior assets. The Washington front office and Adam Peters will make the preferred choice in this case. I rate Maye as a QB2.
For the franchise, Washington would be wise to select Maye with the second overall pick. He weighs 230 pounds and is 6’4”. Though he weighs 210 pounds and is 6’4″, Daniels is thinner than Drake Maye. In his final season with the North Carolina Tar Heels, he passed for 3,608 yards with a 63.3% completion rate, 24 touchdowns, and 9 touchdowns.
On 112 attempts, he gained 449 yards of total yardage and scored nine touchdowns, averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Maye may fall in the rankings a little bit if he is not chosen with the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The New England Patriots seem to be more fond of J.J. McCarthy than they are of Maye.
Isn’t it interesting that the Commanders selected Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick, and Maye ended up going sixth to the New York Giants, where he went on to have a better NFL career than Daniels? For this reason, assessing quarterbacks in the NFL Draft of 2024 is challenging.
