Freshman guard Davin Cosby Jr. was the latest athlete to leave the Alabama basketball team due to the transfer portal. Rylan Griffen, Kris Parker, and Max Scharnowski are now joined by the freshman on the transfer portal. Cosby was rated as a four-star prospect for the recruiting class of 2022.

In 2023–24, Cosby Jr. participated in 22 games, averaging 7.8 minutes of play and 3.6 points per game on 34% three-point shooting. Cosby saw an increase in playing time towards the end, going on to record a career-high 15 points in 13 minutes. Due to Latrell Wrightsell’s injury, he would have played a bigger part in the NCAA tournament, but he injured his foot during practice before the competition.

With Aaron Estrada graduating and Rylan Griffen, Davin Cosby, and Kris Parker using the transfer portal, the Tide now have some voids to cover. Additionally, the squad is awaiting Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, and Latrell Wrightsell’s NBA Draft choices.

When USF guard Chris Youngblood visits Alabama this weekend, all the signs point to the team loading up in the transfer portal. In their search for seasoned backcourt and frontcourt replacements, the team has already made contact with a number of big guys and guards. In addition to transfer Houston Mallette, recruits Derrion Reid, Aiden Sherrell, and Naas Cunningham, the Tide already have four players on the way.

Coming soon: a major retool?
There won’t be any rebuilding seasons after retaining Nate Oats in Tuscaloosa since the Tide will be significant players on the transfer portal each year. The Tide might chase some of the best transfers in the country, so after a deep run in the final four, the roster might undergo a significant overhaul. This season, after losing three coaches and four of his top five scorers, we see Nate Oats take similar action. There won’t be any rebuilding in Tuscaloosa going forward—just retooling.
