Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers are still seeking for offensive tackles, and while the NFL Draft may be their first option, signing a Super Bowl champion free agency could make a lot of sense for this squad.
Donovan Smith, 30, remains on the open market this spring. The two-time Super Bowl winner has started every season since joining the league in 2015, totaling 136 starts in 136 games. He played eight seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before accepting a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Steelers should be able to sign Smith for a one-year contract costing approximately $2.5 million. This would not significantly reduce their salary cap room while still allowing them to sign all of their anticipated draft picks.
Smith’s only disadvantage is that he has little experience playing on the right side. Essentially, the move would represent an improvement above Dan Moore Jr. If the Steelers are unable to add a tackle in the draft, they may consider the veteran as a winning veteran who may help secure their offensive line. It’s a bridge move at best, but one that gives the squad a higher potential in 2024.
If nothing changes with the rookie class, the relocation will most likely occur following the NFL Draft. If the Steelers are unable to sign a guy they believe will be an immediate starter, Smith becomes a possibility – and a cheap one at that. Otherwise, anticipate a rookie to challenge Moore this summer.
