Michigan has a new head coach, having parted ways with Juwan Howard about a week ago.
Dusty May of Florida Atlantic is reportedly nearing an agreement to sign a long-term contract with the program, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
May departs FAU after leading the team for six seasons, during which he turned the Owls from an afterthought to a serious contender. Before receiving another tournament bid this season, he went 126-69 overall and assisted the program in winning the CUSA Championship and a trip to the Final Four in 2023.
Northwestern defeated FAU in overtime on Friday, bringing an end to the team’s run in this year’s tournament. After that, reports indicate Michigan pursued May vigorously.
Not surprisingly, he was courted by a number of schools, but Wojnarowski reports that Michigan ultimately secured his services.
After five seasons on the Ann Arbor sideline, Howard was fired by Michigan on March 15. May will take over in his place. After a miserable 8-24 campaign, the former Coach of the Year led a Wolverines team that missed the tournament for the second straight year.
It was a turbulent season for Howard’s last year on the show. He had a heart procedure in September, but his first game as Michigan’s coach wasn’t until December. Similarly, he almost lost his job due to an altercation with the team’s strength and conditioning coach.
It’s May’s team now.
May previously assisted in rescuing a young program from obscurity, but he will have to work hard to restore prominence to a once-famous program. Whether he is capable of having more
