Sam Cosgrove won’t be remembered for his time at St Andrew’s, and his performance in League One with Barnsley isn’t getting any better either.

Birmingham City supporters had high expectations for Sam Cosgrove when he arrived at St Andrew’s, but the big striker never lived up to his reputation from his time in Scotland.

Before moving back south of the line, the forward scored 31 goals in 79 league games for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, but he was never able to reach the pinnacles at the Championship level.

His game time in the Midlands decreased, and he was eventually shipped to League One promotion-chasing Barnsley at the end of the 2023 summer transfer window. This was followed by a string of loan transfers to clubs higher down the EFL.

It seems like a smart business move for City to cut their losses and let the target player go before the current campaign begins, with a wage off the books and a misfiring striker off the team sheet.

The current career of Sam Cosgrove
As a 20-year-old in the summer of 2017, Cosgrove moved to Carlisle United from the Wigan Athletic academy, despite never playing for the Latics.

However, his time in Cumbria was short-lived as Aberdeen enticed him to go over the border in January of the following year, and he went on to establish himself as one of the top scorers in the SPL the next season.

At Pittodrie, things got off to a contentious start as the striker, who had entered as a late substitution, was sent off just eight minutes into his Dons debut against Celtic.

44 appearances across all competitions with 21 goals The next season marked the beginning of the frontman’s career, and when Birmingham started to show an interest in the striker, he went on to surpass that total with 23 goals.
