Another Veteran Catcher will be relocating Los Angeles Angels

After being released by the Los Angeles Angels a few days ago, Francisco Mejía is expected to sign a minor league contract and rejoin the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a minor league contract with catcher Francisco Mejía, the team announced Thursday morning.

The Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin was first to report that the move was in its final stages. As expected, Mejía earned a non-roster invitation to Spring Training camp as part of the deal.

Mejía was released by the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, two months after he inked a minor league contract with the club. Los Angeles had five catchers competing for an MLB roster spot, so Mejía was given the chance to look for a role elsewhere.

Less than a week later, Mejía has found his way back to Tampa Bay, where he spent the previous three seasons.

Mejía got his start with the Cleveland Indians in 2012, eventually making his MLB debut in 2017. The San Diego Padres picked Mejía up via trade in 2018, before he got sent to the Rays as part of the Blake Snell blockbuster in December 2020.
