With the hiring of Jim Harbaugh as head coach, the Los Angeles Chargers have ushered in a new era.

Whether he has been with the San Francisco 49ers or the University of Michigan, which he guided to the College Football Playoff National Championship just a month ago, Harbaugh has years of experience in creating a winning program and culture.

Harbaugh’s staff is starting to take shape, and he is expected to bring Michigan defensive line coach Mike Elston with him to L.A. to serve in the same capacity, per Tom Pelissero.

Elston started his coaching career with Michigan back in 1997 right after spending four seasons with them as a player at the outside linebacker position.

He then had stints at Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University, and the University of Cincinnati before heading to Notre Dame in 2010.

He spent a dozen seasons at Notre Dame before heading back to Michigan to serve under Harbaugh.

Elston is just one of a number of former Wolverines coaches who are expected to make the move to Southern California to join Harbaugh with the Chargers — defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is reportedly expected to be L.A.’s defensive coordinator.

In addition, Greg Roman, who was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator in San Francisco and his associate head coach at Stanford University, will play a prominent role on Harbaugh’s new staff with the Bolts.
