Just Now: Kenny Pickett sends a loud devastating message to Mike Tomlin

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have not hid their desire to have Mason Rudolph return in 2024 to compete for their starting quarterback job, and they’ve now had conversations with the veteran QB about their hopes to re-sign him.

During an interview on The Ramon Foster Show, Rudolph said head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan told him they want to re-sign him during free agency. Although the team has expressed their interest, Rudolph understands it’s too early in the process to have a clear indication of what’s going to happen.

“Yeah, it was good. Visited with Mike T and Omar both and … it was so early, like three or four days after we played our last game, and there’s a lot neither side knows,” Rudolph said. “I felt like they meant it when they said they’d like to have me back, and I feel like they want to do future business with me. That’s good to hear. But like you said, there are so many variables and it’s still so early, it’s still January, so who knows what will happen?”

This adds to what Tomlin said during his end of the season press conference, clearly stating he hopes the competition this summer is between Kenny Pickett and Rudolph.

“It is,” Tomlin said when asked if the team wants to re-sign Rudolph. “But he is a free agent, and it is free agency, and so we’ll see where that leads us

The Steelers being open about wanting to sign Rudolph doesn’t mean anything is a guarantee. What it says, right now, is that they are serious about trying to keep their QB battle in-house, and that they will attempt to work with Rudolph in free agency.

That being said, the business side of football always plays a role, and Rudolph could get opportunities elsewhere that can determine his final call on next year’s team.
