Antonio Pierce is a popular choice to be the Raiders’ next head coach. At any point, the Raiders are able to do so.
At least two minority candidates must be interviewed in person in order to comply with the Rooney Rule, which has been met. Pierce is now qualified to take on the role.
One could argue that he deserves it. Pierce, who was promoted to interim coach when Josh McDaniels was fired in his second season, went 5-4. Pierce is adored by the players. If Pierce isn’t hired, star defensive end Maxx Crosby might ask for a move. He appears to possess the abilities necessary for any team to be a capable leader.
Owner Mark Davis made a mistake two years ago when he fired G.M. Mike Mayock and interim coach Rich Bisaccia, who had kept the team together through severe hardship and almost defeated the Bengals in the wild-card stage. Considering that Pierce might wind up coaching the Titans, Falcons, or some other team, will Davis want to take the chance of blowing it again?
Of course, the Raiders could interview and sign any other player right now, be it Pete Carroll, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Vrabel, or someone else.
Giving Pierce a chance would be the wise course of action. However, Davis has a large pool of accomplished and seasoned coaches at his disposal if he decides to go all in.
Davis acted in that manner two years ago. And he struck the bat to his own face.
