Prior to Week 18, the Dallas Cowboys made a number of roster changes, one of which was the release of receiver Martavis Bryant. The announcement follows Bryant’s November 7, 2023, signing to the Cowboys practice squad.

Bryant served an extended suspension from the league and hasn’t played an NFL snap (for the Raiders) since 2018. In November, Bryant was granted reinstatement by the NFL, restoring his eligibility to play.

According to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com, Bryant did not progress as swiftly as the team had intended. Racey McMath, a former wide receiver for the Titans, is one of the new guys Dallas added to the practice squad.

“In addition to having one of the greatest names to ever appear on an NFL roster, Riley McMath will take over Martavis Bryant’s practice squad duties,” Walker stated in an article titled “IMPACT: Collins, Wilson reunite with Cowboys” published on January 4, 2024. After weeks of coaching and development, things didn’t go as planned for the latter, and the Cowboys must go into the postseason with the best choices available for depth at every position.

They feel McMath, a former sixth-round pick of the Titans out of LSU, is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound wide receiver with plenty of speed and built similarly to Bryant, which is telling of what the Cowboys are looking for there. “Their cup currently runneth over at wide receiver, but you can never have enough quality ones on the roster,” the statement reads.

Going into Week 18, the Cowboys’ playoff math is straightforward. Three things are guaranteed for Dallas if they defeat the Commanders. First, the Cowboys receive the No. 2 seed due to their division title in the NFC East. Ultimately, this gives the Cowboys the opportunity to perhaps host several postseason games.
