While he will try to return for the season finale at home against Denver Broncos, starting Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs is not guaranteed to play.
Las Vegas interim head coach Antonio Pierce told reporters Wednesday morning that Jacobs will be a game-time decision Sunday (kickoff is set for 1:25 p.m. PT) against Denver.
Pierce did note that Jacobs will “is going to fight until the end” to try to play Sunday, even though the 7-8 Raiders have been eliminated from playoff contention. Jacobs has missed the past three games with a quad injury.
Jacobs has 805 rushing yards this season and is averaging 3.5 yards per carry, his lowest average of his five-season career. He led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards in 2022 and averaged 4.9 yards per carry.
Jacobs could be a free agent this offseason. The Raiders can either extend him, franchise tag him again or let him walk in free agency.
Second-year running back Zamir White has started the past three games and he has 285 rushing yards on 59 carries in that stretch. The fourth-round pick from 2022 may get another chance Sunday to show he be the starter (a much cheaper option than Jacobs in 2024.
The Raiders held a walk-through practice Wednesday and the injury report was an estimation. Jacobs and rookie tight end Michael Mayer would have not practiced if there was one. Mayer has missed the past two games with a toe injury.
