Jim Harbaugh has reportedly received a new contract offer from Michigan to continue leading the Wolverines. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network claims that the offer has a special “no NFL” clause, though.
In recent years, Harbaugh has been considered for NFL positions, and he is anticipated to draw a lot of interest in the next round of coach hiring. After leading the Wolverines to a 13-0 season, the 60-year-old Harbaugh’s team is the clear favorite to win the National Championship.
In order to prevent Harbaugh from being lured by the NFL teams, Michigan already offered him a 10-year, $125-million extension. If he accepts the new contract, Harbaugh would reportedly also have to agree to reject all proposals from the NFL in the 2024 season.
Rapoport reports that Michigan also proposed a shorter deal that comes with an annual salary of $11 million. However, it is unclear whether the alternative proposal has the same “no NFL” clause.
Jim Harbaugh previously served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers between 2011 and 2014. During that time, he led the franchise to three consecutive playoff appearances and reached the Super Bowl XLVII. Harbaugh left the 49ers following the 2014 campaign, having compiled a 44-19-1 record in the regular season and a 5-3 record in the playoffs.
Harbaugh was close to returning to the NFL in 2022 when he had interviews with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings. Having missed out on both jobs, he decided not to entertain any offers from the NFL in 2023. This time around, he is linked with the Raiders once again while also being rumored as one of the candidates for the LA Chargers’ head coaching vacancy
