SUMMARY Following an NFL investigation, which was reported by multiple outlets citing anonymous sources, the Bengals were found not to have violated the league’s injury report policy when they failed to include quarterback Joe Burrow on the report prior to a game on November 16 in which he sustained a season-ending injury.

Burrow’s right arm was seen in a since-deleted Instagram post wearing a soft cast, which led many to believe he may have been hurt before the Bengals’ November game against the Baltimore Ravens.

But the Bengals failed to include him on the injury report, which is a must if he was hurt.

Burrow tore a ligament in his wrist during the game while throwing a touchdown pass, even though he did not make contact with another player. This led some to speculate that Burrow had an injury prior to the game that got worse

Burrow, as quoted by the Associated Press, described the ligament tear as “a completely new injury” and said, “It’s not uncommon for guys to wear compression sleeves on planes because when you go up to that altitude, you know, things can swell up.” The Bengals and Burrow refuted reports that he was injured prior to the game.

The NFL concluded the team was in compliance with its policy after looking over the team’s medical records, observing practice footage, and speaking with Burrow and pertinent medical staff, a league source told CBS Sports, which broke the story first.

The NFL has been contacted by Forbes for a response.

Following his injury, Burrow exited the game and will not return for the remainder of the campaign. Following surgery on Nov. 27, he has been recuperating alongside the team. Fourth-year quarterback Jake Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and led the LSU Tigers to a historic 2019 national championship season. He was selected with the first pick in the 2020 NFL draft. In his second season in the NFL, Burrow led the Bengals to the Super Bowl and is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the game. Despite having a rough start to the season in the first few weeks due to a strained calf muscle during training camp, he was hindered by injuries this year.

After Burrow’s injury, the Bengals are 1-1 on the season and 6-6 overall. Burrow has been replaced at quarterback by Jake Browning of the Bengals. The Bengals are currently trailing the Ravens (9-3), Cleveland Browns (7-5) and Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6), in the AFC North.
