It might have been the Green Bay Packers’ third time. Since the team traded up to select him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Jordan Love has performed like the franchise quarterback they had thought he would be. He has guided the team past the Chargers, Lions, and Chiefs in the past month. In a row, three teams with playoff possibilities.
Love appears to have a bright future, but the Packers will need to assemble a competitive squad around him. Around Love, the Packers have assembled a youthful, promising roster from the 2022 and 2023 Drafts. That being said, a report suggests that the Packers may bench one of their current starters.
According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, AJ Dillon will stand out during the upcoming off-season:
It’s a difficult one. Although Dillon isn’t quite your usual feature back, he has established himself as a reliable No. 2 running back. Through the draft, the Packers can select a new No. 2 pick at a lower cost, and that player may trail Jones in the depth chart for a year before taking over as the starting leadback in 2025.
While Dillon has undoubtedly improved from the beginning of the season, it’s possible that he needed to prove himself as a legitimate No. 1 back in order to be awarded a contract extension, which he hasn’t done and won’t. But the Packers could still cut ties with Jones, re-sign Dillon for a single season, then select a player early to either sit behind or share carries with.
But the Packers might not be willing to give Dillon and his camp a multiyear deal. It’s also possible for the Packers to move on from neither Dillon nor Jones, or from both of them. For obvious reasons, Green Bay’s most fascinating position heading into the offseason is undoubtedly running back.
This season, the 25-year-old running back for Green Bay has played in every game. On 117 runs, he has gained 405 yards and one score while also collecting 16 catches for 146 yards. He has recently been a breath of new air at a position where their shine has faded.
In 2021, Dillon had his greatest season with over 1,000 total yards and seven touchdowns. But since then, his stats have declined with each new season. The position itself may undergo a major makeover since Aaron Jones will become 30 years old the following season and Dillon does not present a strong case to be a legitimate RB1.
