The Cincinnati Bengals announced Monday that cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt has been placed on injured reserve. He will now be forced to miss the next four games, including the Week 13 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In addition, the Bengals have promoted QB AJ McCarron from the practice squad to the main roster, taking Taylor Britt’s spot. This is devastating news for the second-year defensive back, who was having a career season as a cornerback. He did, however, suffer a quad injury in Week 11 that caused him to miss the team’s Week 12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Taylor-Britt was supposed to return in Week 13, but he suffered an ankle injury in Friday’s practice that was evidently serious enoug
h for him to be placed on injured reserve. And, with only six games remaining, it appears we may have seen the last of him until the 2023 season.
McCarron, a 2014 fifth-round NFL Draft pick out of Alabama, spent four years in Cincinnati before moving on to the Buffalo Bills (2018), Oakland Raiders (2018), Houston Texans (2019-20), and Atlanta Falcons (2021).
In 17 regular-season games (four starts, all with the Bengals), McCarron has completed 62.6% of his throws for 1,173 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions.
McCarron also played for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL this spring. As a starter, he finished 6-3, completing 68.8% of his passes for 2,150 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
For the time being, Jake Browning is the starter, but if he continues to struggle or is injured, McCarron will take his place.
